Six Points Leading to a Successful Topic Sentence

1. Write Your Central Idea in Clear Words

As your topic sentence is the very first line holding the entire paragraph, it should be expressed in a clear way which should directly link your topic without being difficult to read or understand. The topic sentence is bound to contain your topic and your opinion on that topic with the controlling idea. For example

The topic will be: decrease the disasters of teenage pregnancy

The topic sentence: at the age of 17, Clara was aware of the fact that she couldn’t afford a child but the realization popped up too late.

Don’t forget that you are not inviting somebody to listen to your idea about the topic so don’t mention “today I am to tell you the catastrophes of getting pregnant at a tender age.” This won’t be considered as a powerful topic sentence. Try making your intentions comprehensible without explaining explicitly.

2. Grip the Readers Mind

The most fascinating quality about the topic sentence is that it grasps the reader’s attention the very instant it is read. Give them the blow of challenging questions related to your topic they would love to answer. The most effective way to let the topic sentence play its role is to barge the reader directly into action. This is applicable in every way whether your writing is nonfiction or fiction and there are many ways of doing it. For example

The topic will be: the deadly consequences of rash driving

The topic sentence: Alice’s life completely turned upside down when a drunkard truck driver bumped into her car and saved her life but unfortunately, her parent’s fate wasn’t the same.

Grip Your Reader’s Attention

In this form of writing, you ought to give detailed description of the character whether on emotional or physical basis.

If you really find it compulsory, then don’t hesitate in using a dialogue which should be relevant to the conversation that magnetizes the readers mind.

Depict any form of emotion. Use your opening sentence basically, your topic sentence to represent an emotion to the reader s sight.

Avoid using question which is rhetorical. Since you want the readers to bring up questions in their minds, you should be free from formulating those questions yourself.

3. Keep Your Topic Sentence Short and Crisp

The topic sentence should convey your intention regarding the specific topic. Don’t make the reader hunt for your intentions. This is done when you keep your topic sentence short and clear. By taking this wise decision while writing your opening sentence, you will be able to keep a continuous flow of the paragraph. For example

The topic will be: disadvantages of cell phones in schools

The topic sentence: Hazel never knew the drawbacks of keeping a cell phone at school until she was rusticated due to an anonymous text that beeped during the exam.topic_sentence

4. Formulate a Convincing Opinion

The whole body or structure of your paragraph is proved by the topic sentence. That is why, the topic sentence should be clearly chosen as it will be portray your thinking and beliefs supported by adhesive evidence. For example

The topic will be: allowing to drink at the of 18 (write against it)

The topic sentence: people, large in number encourages drinking from the age of 18 thinking that the alcohol abuse would eventually decrease but there are people will logical evidences which think entirely opposite.

Avoid Using Factual Information in Your Topic Sentence

Be smart enough to avoid using factual information. No doubt, facts are interesting but unfortunately, they draw the reader’s attention if you use them as your topic sentence.

5. Make Sure You Don’t Talk in Vague Words

Even if your writing sounds extraordinary by filling up the topic sentence with extremely impressive vocabulary words showing excellence and strength but if your topic sentence is not clear then all your efforts are pointless. Your topic sentence would sound confused and forced. Keep your topic sentence clear, sweet and innocent. For example

The topic will be: respect needs to be earned not apportioned (agree)

The topic sentence: although Amelia was an affluent and accomplished business woman, she was widely recognized honorably by the community members due to her respectful behavior towards everybody.

6. Don’t Discuss Something You are Unable to Handle Later

If you are making a statement in the topic sentence, you should be able to carry it intelligently in the whole paragraph. Whether you are depicting opinions, facts or both, you should hold the ability to clearly analyze them in your paragraph controlled by the topic sentence. امروز یه مطلب می خوندم در مورد آموزش زبان انگلیسی
